Goodman Banks Series

For more than 25 years, the Goodman Banks Series (GBS) has provided our students with unusual opportunities for interaction with visual and performing artists of national and international stature. GBS artists-in-residence work directly with students and engage them in the very ideas and challenges that lie at the heart of all artistic endeavors. GBS also sponsors visits to performances at Hartford Stage and The Bushnell and exhibitions at the Wadsworth Atheneum. GBS exerts a lasting impact on our students by transforming their understanding of the creative process through personal interactions with artists.

Performing Arts

In the performing arts, students and artists create music, dance and theater. Recent interactive opportunities have included KO jazz musicians playing with Brazilian pianist Elaine Elias, 6th-graders learning traditional Chinese dance techniques with the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company and students working with alumnus Adam Sullivan '87 on the creation of a radio play, which was performed and taped in front of a studio audience.

Visual Arts

In the visual arts, each visiting artist is in residence for a period of time, posing a problem for the students to address, laying the ground rules for the project and spurring the initial response. At the end of the visit, the the creative arts faculty follow through, guiding the students as they bring their projects to completion. Often the visiting artist returns for an exhibition of the students' work. Recent visual artists have included folk artist Betye Saar, printmaker Jim Lee, painter and assemblage artist Maria Brito and sculptor Anne Cubberly.
